Stripping + Staining Old Deck

This client had a deck that they stained themselves using product from your regular big box store. It started peeling after just a year. We stripped the old water-based stain with a combination of pressure washing and sanding. We then applied a single coat of an oil based semi-transparent stain that will never peel again.

Take a look at how the old stain was peeling. Our decks here in Ottawa go through a lot; cold, rigid winters with snow and hail, and blistering hot summers. It's not uncommon for us to encounter decks that are weathered and need to be stripped and re-finished, just like this one!

To get this deck looking like new, we first had to remove the old failing stain. We applied a chemical to loosen the old stain, and then washed it off. We then used our floor sander to smoothen the deck and get a more uniform look. After prepping the deck, we applied an oil based semi-transparent stain that will never peel again.
